Wings Over Ethiopia

Wings Over Ethiopia

FROM out the sandy waste came puffs of oily smoke, appearing magically against the tan of parched earth.

Larry Colter eased his left rudder and looked anxiously down at the twisting heat waves which sent the world crawling in wretched supplication to the mighty blast of the sun.

The engine of the Waco roared steadily on, deafening the men behind the puffs and the man in the rear cockpit who swung out crazily, holding hard to his slipstream-buffeted DeVry movie camera.

Larry Colter looked back to see if Bill Singer had noticed, but Bill Singer was intent upon getting his aerial action pictures of the Ethiopian War.

The puffs grew in volume. A flying wire parted with a vicious twang and then rippled back in the breeze, saber-slashing the wing fabric. Colter hauled hard on the stick and sent the laboring ship vaulting upstairs.

Good God, they were shooting at him!

Were they blind? What did those natives think this was?

Bill Singer clutched his precious camera and glared, pointing determinedly down. Colter shook his head and pointed at the flying wire. Singer stared blankly at it, seeing it for the first time, and then, remembering why they were there, he pointed down again.

Colter sighed and eased the stick ahead. He did not like this job. Those blacks were under the delusion that every and any ship was an Italian bomber, ready to sock them into heaven with one wallop.

The puffs swelled out again. Black powder, guessed Colter. He felt a jar run through the ship, then another. At five hundred feet, a machine gun stood a chance.

And then the motor quit cold and the wires whistled shrilly and the heat waves batted them about like a squirrel in a cage. Bill Singer was still grinding out film.

Colter picked out a spot on the flat plain and knew that the worst would happen. He had been driven half-crazy with the hunch for a day and a half.

But money was money when it ran into five grand and Colter had been very much on the ground and on the beach. He had taken part in the late Greek Rebellion, a flyer’s part, and had gotten away with his life, but little cash. He had flown his ship to Asmara before his cash and gas gave out and then, after many months, this war had started and had found him irresolute as to which side to take.
